Virtual learning environments are examples of services which provide a considerably useful service, and this is evident with all the advantages it brings, as a service. These advantages include:
- VLEs used by educational facilities (such as schools or universities) allow great features such as access to the establishment’s network, allowing for users to upload to, and download any files they have saved on the establishments networks almost instantly.
- This type of service is capable of supporting entire academic programmes, so educational facilities are able to host electronic access for all subjects offered at the institute, essentially meaning that nothing is left out.
- Additional resources for some subjects are available allowing for students to broaden their knowledge into topics, or to test themselves in order to identify what they need more work on.
- If an establishment has multiple sites (such as universities having multiple campuses) virtual learning environments can allow for integration between these, so resources between the sites stay consistent.
- Teachers at education establishments are able to resort to VLEs for last second lesson planning in occurrence of any issues with the lesson they have planned. This is because over time, staff at the establishment could have created a “repository” of resources which could be used as aids for lessons, or if the collection is large enough, it could be executed in such a way, that the resources could be made into an actual lesson in case of an emergency. Better still, old lessons covering the same topic may also be available from other teachers for use in such situations.
- Useful links for students and teachers can be posted up on virtual learning environments, so when people log into these, they can access these quickly. These links could be things such as websites to help with UCAS applications for students, or links to registers for teachers.
