However, the advantages listed above are also accompanied by a number of drawbacks which essentially affect the impact of communication on social life in a rather negative manner. 
  • Distraction/procrastination
              - Communication services such as social media and instant messaging can result in people, mainly adolescents, to start procrastinating and not completing vital assignments or doing anything productive with their time. As a result, people can fall behind on their work and ultimately miss out on grades, promotions, or even jobs.
  • Recipients may not always receive messages on time due to issues such as a service not being available
              - When organising a social gathering, one may organise everything last-minute. Due to it entirely being last minute, all the people that the event organiser invites may not be aware of the gathering due to invites for it being sent out by email for example, and people not checking their email, so ultimately now knowing of its occurrence
  • Social lives can be affected as a result of cyber bullying
              - Cyber bullying has become a huge problem in today’s information age. As well as it having a negative effect on one’s personal life, it also affects social lives. Be this due to untrue rumours being spread to break ties with people, or to segregate minority groups out of nothing more than mere hatred – social lives are affected by this, and in a rather negative demeanour too.
