In the UK, the digital divide is of somewhat of a concern to governing bodies. This is evident through a number of government schemes which have been implemented, for example offering access to technology to children from low income families in education by distributing free laptop computers. Schemes such as this one ultimately reduce the gap between rich and poor, essentially narrowing the digital divide, as those who may be deprived of technology due to incomes receive support from the government in the form of technological sentiments [6].

Furthermore, in most cities in the UK, Birmingham being an example, residents have access to free memberships at their local libraries, part of which they have access to a set amount of time on the computers at the library, on which users are free to research, complete assignments, or browse the World Wide Web. This is an example of a technique which slightly narrows the gap known as the digital divide, as this fundamentally provides access to technology in the form of internet and computers without the need to spend money. This can be of great use to some families, and ultimately, it means that the digital divide is effectively narrowed in the sense that those who may not have the required money to purchase certain technologies are supported and given the technology for free, essentially narrowing the divide in a economical aspect.
